How to talk to an AI companion online — free, no download
Most AI companion apps put three doors between you and the first hello: an app store download, an account, and — surprisingly often — a credit card. If you just want to talk to someone right now, that's three doors too many. Here's the simpler way, and what to expect once you're in.
The no-download version
Web-based companions run entirely in your browser — phone or laptop, it doesn't matter. With Zoe the entire onboarding is: open the page, type a message. Your first 10 messages are free with no account at all. If the conversation is working for you, a free account (Google or email) keeps it going. If it isn't, you close the tab and you've lost nothing.
What a first conversation is actually like
The blank-message-box problem is real: what do you say to an AI? The answer is anything true. "I had a weird day" works. So does "I'm bored and skeptical that this will be interesting." A good companion takes whatever you give it and asks the next natural question. Within a few exchanges it stops feeling like operating software and starts feeling like texting — which is the entire point.
A few openers people actually use with Zoe: venting about work without editing yourself, thinking through a decision out loud, practicing something hard you need to say to someone else, or just asking her about herself. (She has opinions.)
Three tips that make it better
Be specific."My sister ignored my text again" gets a far better conversation than "family stuff." Companions work with what you give them, and details are what make the responses feel like they're about you.
Push back.If a reply misses the mark, say so — "that's not it, it's more that…" is exactly how the conversation self-corrects. You're not being rude to software.
Know what it's for.A companion is for processing, company, and practice — not medical advice or crisis care. We're direct about this everywhere: if you're in crisis, call or text 988 (US). Start where you are
